On the other side were four listening booths, each containing a wind up table model gramophone and a couple of chairs.
My friend and I would study the leaflets of each month’s new releases and go in with a list of ten or a dozen. We would present this to the proprietor who would extract them from his filing and we would take them to a booth and listen to them. We would emerge and perhaps buy one, leaving him to return the others to his shelving. His eyes used to glisten behind his glasses and we sensed his disapproval but he never said anything.
