Red House Records

Red House Records

Picture
Red House was opened in 1975 .Charlie Gillett was very supportive and gave us a number of mentions on his Honky Tonk show, which was quite something at the time since we were located some 50 miles west of London and there were very few collectors record shops outside the major conurbations. We have a beautiful old Rock-Ola Juke Box circa 1959 which we had on 'Free Play' for the benefit of our customers. Sold it for 40 quid when we closed down!!!In spite of the lack of business success it was great fun whilst it lasted.

(May 20, 2014) Pete Downs said:Great shop, remember the jukebox well. Still have quite a few 45's I bought there including a mint copy of Otis Redding - Dock of the Bay on UK Stax as well as several USA Stax 45's. Also have a Crazy Cavan EP with the centre punched out which I seem to remember being on the Jukebox at one time.

(Mar 27, 2013) Keith Saynor said:Red House Records was a great record shop.....I remember picking up some Kinks records there in the 70's...such a shame that this and so many others have disappeared

Nick Plumb "Purchased many of my albums from Red House, what a great set of speakers and sound they had, think they were wharfdales. The hours that were spent flicking through tons of vynil.  The Jug of Love by Mighty Baby springs to mind. I purchased that along with Moving Waves by Focus. What heady days. - but many many more, some of which I still have in my collection.Great memories. " (March 24, 2016)

When I return to Cambridge for an annual lunch and a Clare College Gala Day, later in the summer, I first go to where Red House used to be and is now a second hand bookshop. I spend a minute in contemplation of great days there, spending my student money on Little Walter, Muddy Waters and much more and listening to Nick talk about seeing them. I would often go with a friend, still a friend to this day, and fellow Clare student after we had done mid-morning circuit training at Fenner's. A rounded life indeed and we did apply ourselves to our studies, sometimes. Nick and the atmosphere in the shop were special. We don't forget you, Nick.
