Our one department store, which closed many years ago, one of the first casualties of the new Eastgate shopping mall. They had a good-sized record department, and I think they must never have bothered returning unsold stock to the distributors - every so often the entire basement of the store would be given over to a Record Clearout Sale where stuff they must have had for decades was put out to grass for pennies. I think one time they even had a rack of new-old-stock 78s (in 1980!) I remember coming out of Arnotts one day in 1980 with a huge stack of EMI and Bell label flops priced at 3p each.
