Phone book search results for ‘A. V. Nutley’ at 48 Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath, showed it was open from 1954 to 1972. It then became ‘Tracks Records’ which continued to trade at the same address from 1972 to 1981. Comment: Dave Harwood

Terry Clemson: Remember Nutley's record shop. I was a regular customer !!!

I remember it still being there in the 1980’s and Terry Clemson remembers it on Bygone Croydon’s Facebook page:

Tracks Records was my father's business (and I worked there as a Saturday boy in my early teens!). He traded from 1972 to 1987 (not 1981), having bought the business from the previous owner (who himself had bought it from Mr Nutley!).

Hi there! My father Bernard H Thorpe owned and managed Tracks Records from 1972 and it continued to trade until 1987 (not 1981!) when British Rail sold that row of shops to an independent landlord who tripled the rent and forced closure of a number of the long-established businesses there. We became a mail-order company from 1987 until the late 1990s.

There used to be another record shop in Brigstock Road, close to Thornton Heath Pond. It was in the parade of shops that runs around the corner into London Road, opposite the bus garage and was open from late 1950s to mid 1970s. They had listening booths and the shop was run by Mrs Woodger who employed Saturday staff.
