I found this piece in the 'Liverpool Echo' dated 15th March 1984: “THE man who first put the Beatles on tape has died in Liverpool at the age of 88. It was in 1957 that four teenagers calling themselves The Quarrymen walked into a converted back-room that doubled as a recording studio in Percy Phillips' home in Kensington. Percy charged the future Beatles just 17s 6d to make a demo tape and then cut a record. But later he wiped the tapes to save money. Percy's son Frank, an electrical engineer, said that his father would often stay in the shop until two in the morning, recording musicians on the equipment he had.”
