Tesco Delamare.. "When I first started collecting records in earnest in the early 1980's one of the most familiar stickers on records in junk shops and at the early car boot sales was 'Delamare 10p'. For years I wondered about the origin of it-I did'nt remember a shop called 'Delamare' Then of course,I found out it was Tescos' 'bargain basement' so to speak. Tesco's equivalent to Woolworths's' Winfield ' brand. The Delamare 10p stickers were often on,interestingly,American 45's,particularly on the Philips group of labels-Philips,Mercury Fontana- gems like The Millionaire's Northern Soul classic 'Never For Me'(see photo) and The Legendary Stardust Cowboy's Psycho- Rockabilly classic 'Paralysed' etc.' Delamare 10p' also graced a lot of UK RCA singles from 1969/70',a few reggae labels and the odd Major Minor 45 .These were bought in the 70's and made their way to the junk shops/boot sales/jumble sales in the 80's. Anyway,it wasn't until last year that I found a Tesco Delamare 45' record bag-here it is". Comment: Michael Viner.

Bought as many of the Reggae 45s in the Balham branch as I could and still have them now. Mostly Pama and Trojan subsidiary labels and Bamboo, all from the `68-`70 era. I don't recall any Melodisc (Blue Beat, Fab, Dice etc) or Island though. Other labels were Beacon, Young Blood, RCA (as Michael mentions - lots of copies of 'Jingle Jangle' by the Archies!) and pressings (I got 'Cinderella Rockafella' on Philips - no idea why!) Debates still rage about how Tesco came by these umpteen thousand 45s (most likely liquidated stock from a distributor(s)) which appeared throughout the whole of the UK but possibly in varying quantities and titles.
